Samoa's PM Calls Early Election After Budget Defeat
Samoa's leader, the Prime Minister, wants to have an election sooner than planned because the people in charge of making the rules didn't approve of the money plan (the budget).
This plan was voted down, meaning the government couldn't spend money as they intended.
The Prime Minister has been in charge since 2021 and is the first woman to hold the role.
Now, because the budget failed, they have to hold an election within three months so people can vote on who should be in charge.
Samoa's Prime Minister seeks an early election following the rejection of the government's budget.
The budget was rejected with 34 lawmakers against it, 16 in favor, and two abstaining.
An election must be held within 90 days of the budget's rejection.
Prime Minister Fiamē Naomi Mataʻafa has led Samoa since 2021 and is the country's first woman prime minister.
The early election follows months of political turmoil, including votes of no confidence.
