Kerala Mpox Outbreak Linked to UAE Travel
Doctors in India found that most people who got sick from a new type of mpox virus in Kerala had recently traveled to the United Arab Emirates.
They studied 10 people who got sick between September 2024 and March 2025.
Seven of them had been to the UAE, and one had been to Oman.
This new type, called Clade Ib, is more serious than the old one.
The World Health Organization said this outbreak is a big problem because the virus spreads easily and makes people very sick.
More than 22,000 people around the world have gotten sick from this new type, and some have died.
The doctors said this new type is worse than the one that spread in 2022.
Kerala reported 10 mpox cases of Clade Ib strain from September 2024 to March 2025.
70% of cases had travel history to UAE, 10% to Oman.
Clade Ib is more potent than the original Clade II variant.
WHO declared mpox outbreak a public health emergency on August 14, 2024.
Over 22,000 global cases of Clade Ib reported, with a higher fatality rate than Clade IIb.
