Maharashtra Minister Proposes Exempting Teachers from BLO Duties
A minister in Maharashtra, India, has asked the state's leader to stop making teachers do extra jobs like helping with elections.
The minister says teachers should only teach in schools because doing other jobs makes students lose out on learning.
The minister suggests that other government workers, like health workers or postmen, can do these extra jobs instead.
Teachers are happy about this idea because they think it will help them focus more on teaching.
Some teachers also mentioned that the law says they have to help with elections, but they hope the government will change this rule.
Maharashtra School Education Minister Dada Bhuse wrote to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to exempt teachers from BLO duties and election-related work.
Bhuse argues that teachers' primary duty is teaching, and BLO duties cause academic loss for students.
He suggested using manpower from other government departments for BLO duties.
Teachers have welcomed the move, citing academic loss and workload issues.
Some teachers noted that the RTE Act mandates their participation in elections, census, and disaster situations.
