Manipur NRC Strike Paralyses Imphal Valley Before Deferred Census

Manipur NRC Strike Paralyses Imphal Valley Before Deferred Census

People in Manipur held a one-day shutdown over how the population census should be conducted.

The group organizing it wanted the National Register of Citizens updated before the census.

Shops, schools, offices and buses closed in five districts of the Imphal Valley.

Roads were mostly empty, and bamboo poles were placed on some roads to stop traffic.

The Union government said the census in Manipur would be postponed.

This decision followed a meeting led by Home Minister Amit Shah.

The organizing group continued the shutdown because it said there was no official written notice confirming the postponement.

Government leaders asked the group to stop because ordinary people and students were being affected.

Another tribal organization, the Kuki-Zo Council, opposed conducting an NRC only in Manipur.
