IT Hiring Slowdown: Top Six Firms See Sharp Drop in Q1
The Indian IT sector, where companies help businesses with technology, is slowing down its hiring.
The top six IT companies added far fewer new employees in the recent quarter compared to the previous one.
This is because companies are now using more AI and automation, which means they need fewer people to do the same amount of work.
Instead of hiring lots of new people, they are training their existing employees to do new things.
Hiring of new graduates is also down.
However, there are early signs that things might be getting a little better, as more companies are seeing positive employment numbers, although it's still too early to tell if this will continue.
Top six Indian IT firms added only 3,847 employees in Q1 FY26, a 72% drop from the previous quarter.
TCS and Infosys reported net headcount increases, while HCLTech, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, and LTIMindtree saw declines.
AI and automation are cited as factors reshaping hiring trends, leading to a shift towards upskilling and strategic workforce planning.
Entry-level hiring of fresh graduates has dropped by nearly 50% compared to pre-Covid levels.
The first half of 2025 saw positive net headcount movement across the top six firms, a sign of potential recovery.
