AI Receptionists Shift Focus to Optimisation, Not Adoption
A company called Upfirst looked at almost half a million phone calls that were answered by AI helpers.
They found that most people hang up before the AI even starts talking.
The report says that small changes, like saying the company name, asking a question, and telling people the caller is talking to an AI, can make people stay on the line.
Things like whether the AI voice sounds male or female or how long the greeting is don’t really matter.
So, instead of just buying more AI helpers, companies are now trying to make the ones they have work better.
Businesses are prioritising optimisation of AI receptionists over new deployments.
Upfirst analysed 450,702 calls from 503 AI agents to study hang‑up causes.
Only 13 % of hang‑up variation is due to AI settings; most occurs before AI interaction.
Greeting callers with the business name, ending with a question, and disclosing AI presence reduce hang‑ups.
Voice gender, greeting length, and question style have little measurable impact.
