Dehradun Residents Revive Chipko Spirit to Save Sal Trees

In July 2026, residents of Dehradun in Uttarakhand protested against the felling of over 4,369 century-old Sal trees for the expansion of National Highway 7.

The protest, inspired by the Chipko movement of the 1970s, involved tree-hugging, tying sacred threads around trees, and observing Kala Harela to mourn the trees being felled.

The protesters aimed to preserve the trees and the elephant corridor that connects to the Rajaji Tiger Reserve.

Despite the highway authorities' plans for conservation measures like elephant underpasses and compensatory afforestation, the protesters insisted on exploring gentler alternatives.

After sustained protests, tree felling was paused, and fresh consultations were opened with residents and experts.
