Kashmir Awaits Snowfall Amid Cold Spell
Kashmir has been very dry lately, but soon it will start snowing.
This is because of a weather system called a western disturbance.
The snow will start around December 21, which is also the beginning of a very cold period called Chillai-Kalan.
During this time, it snows a lot and gets very cold.
Some places in Kashmir are already very cold, with temperatures below zero.
The snow will help, but right now, people are having health problems because of the dry weather.
In Calcutta, the first half of December has been the coolest in a decade, with temperatures staying between 15 and 16 degrees.
The weather has been steady and pleasant, but there hasn't been much rain or snow due to weak western disturbances.
A western disturbance is expected to bring snowfall to Kashmir on December 21-22, coinciding with the start of Chillai-Kalan, the harshest winter period.
The dry spell has led to an increase in ailments like cough and cold, with most places in Kashmir experiencing sub-zero night temperatures.
Shopian and Pulwama were the coldest places in Kashmir, with temperatures at -4.4°C.
The first half of December 2025 has been the coolest in at least a decade in Calcutta, with average daily minimum temperatures around 16°C.
Western Disturbances have been weak this year, affecting regions like Kashmir and the Western Himalayas with light rainfall and snowfall, while Calcutta has experienced steady, pleasant weather with minimal rain.
