Delhi Deploys 23,000 Personnel Ahead of CJP Protest
The Cockroach Janata Party and a student group want to hold a protest in Delhi on October 10.
They want the country’s chief election official, Gyanesh Kumar, to resign because they allege problems with how election rolls are being updated.
Delhi Police has not approved the protest and says restrictions on gatherings are in force.
The government has made about 23,000 central security personnel available to help police.
Officers plan to use barricades and cameras and watch important roads and transport locations.
Some liquor shops are also ordered to close on October 9 and 10 as a precaution.
Organisers say people should be able to protest peacefully, and compare Delhi’s restrictions with demonstrations in Mumbai and Bengaluru.
The Cockroach Janata Party and All India Students’ Association called an October 10 protest at Jantar Mantar demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
Organisers cite alleged irregularities in the Election Commission’s functioning, particularly its Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Delhi Police has not granted permission, citing prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
The Home Ministry made 221 Central Armed Police Forces companies—about 23,000 personnel—available to Delhi Police through October 12; local deployment could also increase.
Authorities plan layered barricades, CCTV and facial-recognition surveillance, border and transport-hub monitoring, and two-day closure of specified liquor outlets on October 9 and 10.
