India Mandates EV Sound Alert System for Road Safety
The Indian government wants to make electric vehicles safer for everyone.
Starting in October 2027, all electric cars, buses, and trucks must make a sound.
This system is called AVAS and is like a built-in horn that alerts people nearby.
New electric cars and trucks will start using AVAS in October 2026.
This is because electric vehicles are very quiet, and it can be hard for people to hear them coming.
The new rule will make sure that electric vehicles can be heard, like the ones used in the US, Japan, and some European countries.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways proposed mandatory AVAS for EVs.
New EV models must have AVAS from October 1, 2026.
Existing EV models must be fitted with AVAS from October 1, 2027.
AVAS aims to alert pedestrians and other road users.
The requirement follows standards similar to the US, Japan, and EU.
