Aadhaar-Death Registry Link to Tackle Ghost Voters
The government is trying to solve the problem of ghost voters in Bengal.
They plan to link the state's death registry with the Aadhaar system.
This way, when someone dies, their Aadhaar card will be deactivated, and the Election Commission will be notified to remove their name from the voter list.
This is important because some people might be using the names of dead people to vote illegally.
The process is already happening in some other states.
The Election Commission has also extended the deadline for updating voter lists because some workers who help with this process have died, and there have been protests.
UIDAI to link Aadhaar with state death registries to deactivate cards of deceased individuals.
Election Commission to receive real-time updates on deaths for voter list purification.
Estimated 40-50 lakh ghost voters in Bengal's electoral rolls.
Election Commission extends SIR deadline to December 11 amid BLO protests and fatalities.
BLOs face challenges due to technical glitches and connectivity issues in digitizing forms.
