India's New Rules Target Automakers' Fuel Efficiency Compliance
The government is proposing new rules to make it easier to punish car companies that don't meet fuel efficiency standards.
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) will be able to enforce these rules, with penalties decided by State Electricity Regulatory Commissions.
This is part of a push to reduce carbon emissions.
The new, stricter CAFE 3 standards will come into effect in 2027.
Automakers are concerned about the new rules and are giving their feedback.
In the past, it has been difficult to penalize automakers.
The government wants to ensure that these standards are met to combat pollution.
New draft rules empower the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) to penalize automakers for non-compliance with fuel efficiency standards.
The State Electricity Regulatory Commission will adjudicate and impose penalties.
CAFE 3 norms, to be implemented by April 1, 2027, will lower CO2 emissions limits to 91 grams per km.
Automakers have 30 days to provide feedback on the draft rules.
Automakers previously faced challenges in being penalized for non-compliance.
