Delhi Tightens Pollution Controls on Vehicles
On New Year's Eve, Delhi Police gave out more than 11,500 tickets for breaking traffic rules.
The most common rule broken was parking in the wrong place.
Other common violations included not having a pollution check certificate, not wearing a helmet while riding, driving dangerously, and driving after drinking alcohol.
Police set up special checks at busy places to make sure people followed the rules and stayed safe.
Additionally, Delhi has been impounding old vehicles that cause pollution.
Since October 1, 2025, over 7,789 end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) have been impounded, and about 12.08 lakh vehicles have been fined for causing pollution.
The government is taking these steps to reduce air pollution in Delhi, which is a big problem, especially in the winter.
The air quality has been improving, and some restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) have been lifted.
Over 11,500 traffic challans were issued in Delhi on December 31, with the most common violation being no-parking (6,407 challans).
2,763 challans were issued for Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC) violations, and 1,255 for riding without helmets.
868 challans were issued for drunken driving, and 290 for dangerous driving.
Since October 1, 2025, 7,789 end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) have been impounded, and about 12.08 lakh vehicles have been fined for causing pollution.
The Delhi government has been taking steps to reduce vehicular emissions, which account for 25% to 30% of Delhi’s air pollution, including impounding ELVs and fining vehicles without a valid PUCC.
