IUML MP Highlights Marriage-Related Suicides in India
An Indian MP named Harees Beeran spoke in the Rajya Sabha about a big problem.
He said that in 2023, over 1.71 lakh people died by suicide, and most of these were because of problems in their marriages.
He explained that women often suffer in silence because of issues like dowry demands, emotional neglect, and not having enough support.
He also mentioned that even though India has strong laws to protect women, these laws are not being followed properly.
He called for better enforcement of these laws, more awareness, and support systems to help women during difficult times.
He said that each suicide affects not just the woman but her entire family, causing lifelong trauma.
He ended by saying that sometimes, even silence can be harmful.
IUML MP Harees Beeran raised concerns over 1.71 lakh suicides in 2023, majority linked to marital issues.
Highlighted dowry-related harassment, emotional neglect, and implementation failures of existing laws.
Noted that hormonal changes during menstruation, pregnancy, and lactation affect emotional well-being.
Emphasized the need for empathetic enforcement, institutional accountability, and social reform.
Stressed that each suicide represents the collapse of a family and lifelong scars on children.
