Pentagon Lists 18 Iran War Deaths as Officials Cite 22–23
The Pentagon has a public list of American military deaths connected to the Iran war.
That list showed 18 deaths as of September 18.
The Washington Post spoke with six officials who knew about internal casualty records.
Five officials said at least 22 service members had died, and another said the number could be 23.
This does not necessarily mean every additional person died in combat.
Some may have died while serving in the Middle East during the hostilities.
The Pentagon divides deaths into different operation categories, which may help explain part of the difference.
The Defense Department has not explained the gap, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called the report a lie.
Three contractors also reportedly died, and more than 820 troops were wounded.

Fourteen deaths are listed under Operation Epic Fury and four under a separate Overseas Operations category.
Three U.S. contractors reportedly died, while more than 820 service members were listed as wounded in action.
