Sensex falls 388 points, Nifty settles below 24,500

A stock market is like a big scoreboard that shows how much companies are worth.

On Tuesday, 11 August, India's two main scoreboards — the Sensex and the Nifty 50 — went down.

One reason is that investors who had made money decided to sell their shares and take their profits.

Another reason is that the price of oil jumped to about $90 for a barrel because people worried about a very important shipping route called the Strait of Hormuz.

When oil costs more, many things become pricier, and people worry that banks will make borrowing more expensive.

There was also uncertainty about talks between the United States and Iran.

Some companies still did well: medicine companies and computer-services companies gained value, while food, real-estate and metal companies lost value.

The Indian rupee also became a little weaker against the US dollar.

Experts think the market may slip a bit more before it bounces back.
