44% Indian Cities Face Chronic Air Pollution
A new report says that nearly half of India's cities have really bad air pollution all the time.
This is because of things like cars, factories, and dust that keep polluting the air.
The government has a program to clean the air, but it only helps a small number of cities.
The worst cities for pollution are in places like Assam, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh.
The report says the government needs to do more to make the air cleaner, like setting stricter rules for factories and using better ways to measure pollution.
Recently, the government also closed down 16 factories in the Delhi area because they were not following the rules to control pollution.
This shows that the government is trying to take action, but there is still a lot more to do.
Nearly 44% of Indian cities face chronic air pollution, driven by persistent emission sources.
Out of 4,041 cities assessed, 1,787 exceeded the national annual PM2.5 standard every year from 2019-2024.
Only 130 cities are covered under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), addressing just 4% of chronically polluted cities.
Top polluted cities in 2025 include Byrnihat (Assam), Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurugram, and Greater Noida.
Uttar Pradesh has the most non-attainment cities, followed by Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh.
