Pakistan Weighs Smart Lockdown as Fuel Prices Surge

Pakistan Weighs Smart Lockdown as Fuel Prices Surge

Pakistan has made petrol and diesel more expensive.

Officials say world oil prices rose because of fighting and security problems in West Asia.

They are also worried that oil supplies could be disrupted.

The government is considering ways to use less fuel, such as shorter workweeks and earlier market closures.

These ideas are sometimes called a smart lockdown, but Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik said no such discussions had taken place.

A proposed fuel-help program would give motorcyclists five cheaper litres each week.

Car owners could receive 10 cheaper litres every 10 days.

The government says this help cannot fully cancel out the higher prices.

Jamaat-i-Islami has threatened protests if prices are not lowered.
