NHRC issues notice over children crossing dam to school

NHRC issues notice over children crossing dam to school

Children in a place called Vidisha in India have to travel a very long way to get to school, about 13 kilometres.

To make the trip shorter, they climb across a river on top of pillars that stick out of the water.

This is very dangerous, and a video of them doing it was shared on the internet.

Many people saw it and got worried.

A government body that protects people's rights, called the NHRC, saw the video too.

It sent a message to the state government, asking them to explain what they will do to help.

The law says every child has the right to go to school safely.

One girl was too short to cross the pillars and missed so much school that she failed her exams.

The NHRC wants a safe bridge or road so kids don't have to risk their lives.

They asked for an answer within two weeks.
