Pune Court Orders Community Service for Drunken Misconduct

Pune Court Orders Community Service for Drunken Misconduct

In Pune, Maharashtra, a court has ordered two people to do four days of community service because they were drunk and misbehaved in public.

This is the first time this kind of punishment has been given in the state.

The Maharashtra government made new rules in 2025 that allow courts to give community service as a punishment for certain crimes.

These rules say that community service can last from one day to 31 days, but not more than eight hours a day.

The rules were made under a new law called the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

The two people admitted they were guilty, and the court decided to give them this new type of punishment instead of a fine or jail time.
