SpaceX's Starbase Becomes a City in Texas
Elon Musk's SpaceX company now has its own city in Texas called Starbase!
Residents voted overwhelmingly to make it official, with a new mayor and commissioners in charge.
Starbase is small, with about 500 residents, and will be a Type C city.
This means it can collect property taxes and has the authority to manage local issues.
It started with SpaceX buying land in 2012 and the idea of a city has been discussed since 2021.
The city could potentially control access to a local beach during rocket launches.
Residents of the area where SpaceX operates in Texas voted to incorporate a new city named Starbase.
The city covers approximately 1.6 square miles and is home to an estimated 500 residents.
Bobby Peden, a SpaceX VP, will serve as the first mayor.
The city will be classified as a Type C city, allowing officials to charge property taxes.
A new law could give Starbase officials the authority to restrict access to a local beach.
