South Korea Plans Underwater Data Centres to Tackle AI Demand

South Korea Plans Underwater Data Centres to Tackle AI Demand

Computers that help power things like smart apps and websites need special buildings called data centres.

These buildings use a lot of electricity and take up a lot of space.

South Korea is running out of room on land, and its power grids are getting too full.

So the country came up with a clever idea: build data centres underwater.

The city of Ulsan is working on an underwater data centre that could hold up to 100,000 computers.

It would sit about 20 metres below the ocean surface.

The cold seawater would keep the computers cool naturally, like putting a cold drink in the fridge.

This could cut carbon emissions by about 12%.

By 2028, the Seoul region will need more than 1,450 megawatts of power for data centres, but very few building requests are being approved.

Underwater data centres could be one way to solve this big problem.
