Gold Loan Boom: Muthoot Finance Outperforms Manappuram Finance Amidst Rising Demand
Imagine people in India have lots of gold jewelry, like a piggy bank made of gold!
Recently, more people are borrowing money by giving their gold to companies, kind of like a pawn shop, because it's getting harder to buy things.
These companies, called NBFCs, are lending out a lot more money using gold.
Two big companies, Muthoot Finance and Manappuram Finance, are doing this.
Muthoot Finance is doing really well, making much more profit and lending more gold than before.
Manappuram Finance isn't doing as well; its profits are down this time.
Even big banks like HDFC are lending money, but they are being more careful.
Because many people need this gold loan service, investors are interested in these companies.
The total gold loan amount reached Rs 3.16 lakh crore by September 19, 2025, a significant increase from the previous year.
NBFCs are the primary providers of gold loans, accounting for 55-60% of the total market.
Muthoot Finance reported a substantial 87.5% year-on-year increase in net profit to Rs 2,345 crore, with assets under management growing by 45%.
Manappuram Finance saw its net profit decrease by 20% to Rs 375.9 crore, and its net non-performing assets ratio increased.
Investor sentiment towards gold loan NBFCs remains positive due to strong demand and growth prospects, reflected in their stock performance and valuations.
