Pune, Nashik Documentary Screenings Cancelled Over Certification Dispute

Pune, Nashik Documentary Screenings Cancelled Over Certification Dispute

A documentary about activist Umar Khalid was supposed to be shown in Pune and Nashik.

The screenings were cancelled after police said the film did not have a certificate from India’s film-certification board.

The board says public screenings of uncertified films can break the law unless an exemption is granted.

Police also said the events could create law-and-order problems.

Organisers argued that people should be allowed to watch and discuss the film.

They said cancelling it harms free speech and debate.

The ABVP opposed the Nashik screening, saying the documentary glorifies Khalid.

Similar screenings were cancelled at institutions in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

Khalid has been in judicial custody for six years in a case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots, but the trial has not yet begun.
