Tamil Nadu Farmers Bury Themselves in Sand Protest for Water
Farmers in Tamil Nadu buried themselves in sand on the banks of the Cauvery River to show how badly they need water for their crops.
They were led by a man named Ayya Kannu.
The farmers said that the state of Karnataka is not giving them enough water, even though a court said they should.
They also said that a new dam project called Mekedatu would make the problem worse.
Ayya Kannu asked the Tamil Nadu chief minister to take the issue to the Supreme Court and ask for a huge amount of money from Karnataka.
The protest happened on August 2, 2026, in the city of Tiruchirappalli.
Karnataka’s chief minister said he would meet with the Tamil Nadu chief minister later, and a big meeting was planned in Bengaluru.
The farmers want the water to grow their crops and keep their farms alive.
Farmers in Tiruchirappalli buried themselves in sand to demand immediate release of Cauvery water for irrigation.
Protest led by Farmers' Association president Ayya Kannu, accusing Karnataka of treating Tamil Nadu as a "drainage state".
Ayya Kannu urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay to file a Supreme Court suit seeking ₹1 lakh crore compensation from Karnataka.
Protesters also opposed Karnataka's proposed Mekedatu dam project, citing further water shortages.
Karnataka CM DK Shivakumar deferred a meeting with Tamil Nadu CM and called an all‑party meeting in Bengaluru on August 2.
