Madhya Pradesh Students Protest School Mergers Over Travel Distances
Students in many parts of Madhya Pradesh are protesting changes to their schools.
Some schools are being combined with other schools farther away.
This means younger children may have to travel several kilometres.
In one village, the route to the new school passes through a forest.

Other students protested problems such as waterlogging, teacher transfers and poor food.
The students want their schools and important services to remain accessible.
Officials’ reasons for the proposed mergers were not described in the article.
Students in 11 districts, along with Bhopal, Ujjain and Ashoknagar, reportedly protested school-related issues.
Students and parents opposed mergers that would move children farther from their villages and homes.
In Katni, a school was merged with one about seven kilometres away through dense forest.
Protests elsewhere focused on waterlogging, a principal’s removal, teacher transfers and poor residential-school food.
