CAG Flags Widening Fiscal Gap in Telangana's Finances
Imagine the government is like a household managing its money.
In the first half of the year, Telangana's government earned more money and spent more money than last year.
However, the money it collected from taxes and other sources wasn't as much as it had planned.
At the same time, it had to pay more for things like interest on loans, salaries for its workers, and help for people (subsidies).
This situation created a 'fiscal gap,' meaning the government spent more than it earned.
The CAG, which is like an independent auditor, is pointing out that this gap is getting bigger and could cause problems for the rest of the year.
Telangana's income and expenditure increased in the first half of fiscal 2025-26 compared to the previous year.
Revenue collections for the period fell short of budgetary targets.
The state reported a revenue deficit of ₹12,452.89 crore and a fiscal deficit of ₹45,139.12 crore.
Borrowings during the period matched the fiscal deficit amount.
Rising debt servicing costs, salaries, and subsidy spending are contributing to the fiscal challenges.
