Nigeria Army Chief Vows to Crush Insurgents Amid US Pressure
Nigeria's top army general has promised to fight harder against a long-standing rebel group.
This comes after the U.S. President called Nigeria a place where religious freedom is not respected and warned he might take military action.
The army chief visited a part of the country where fighting has been happening for many years.
He told the soldiers to work even harder to stop the rebels, Boko Haram and ISWAP.
The army chief also promised to give the soldiers better equipment and support.
The Nigerian President had also told the army to try harder to stop terrorism.
Even though the army has had some successes, the rebels have recently attacked both soldiers and regular people.
This new push is meant to finally end the fighting.
Nigeria's new army chief, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, pledged to intensify military operations against insurgents in the northeast.
The commitment follows U.S. President Donald Trump's designation of Nigeria as a "country of particular concern" for religious freedom violations.
Trump previously warned of potential U.S. military action if Nigeria fails to curb violence against Christians.
Shaibu visited Borno State, the epicenter of a 16-year insurgency by groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP, promising troops improved logistics and support.
The army chief's visit and renewed commitment align with a directive from President Bola Tinubu to invigorate counterterrorism efforts.
