Umar Khalid Wins International Human Rights Defender Award

Umar Khalid Wins International Human Rights Defender Award

Umar Khalid is an activist who has been in jail since 2020 while awaiting trial in a case linked to the Delhi riots.

He has now received an international award for people who defend human rights while facing danger.

The award was given in Dublin, but Khalid could not attend.

The group giving the award said his continued imprisonment raises concerns about how laws and bail rules can affect people who express dissent.

Police say the riots were part of a larger plan, while the award organisation says a speech cited by prosecutors was not incitement.

Courts have denied Khalid bail, though the Supreme Court said he may ask again after a specified point in the witness examination or after one year.
