Global Civic Freedoms Shrinking Rapidly in 2025
The Civicus People Power Report 2025 shows that civic freedoms are shrinking quickly around the world.
Only 7% of people live in countries where they can freely speak out and protest.
Many countries, including the US, are making it harder for people to exercise their rights.
This is happening because some governments are using more force against protesters and journalists, and they're making laws that limit freedoms.
The report also says that rich countries are spending less on helping poorer countries, while spending more on the military.
This makes it harder to address important issues like climate change and inequality.
The report suggests that countries in the Global South, like India and South Africa, could take a leading role in promoting democracy and human rights.
Only 7% of the global population lives in countries with free or open civic space in 2025.
The number of countries denying civic freedoms has increased from 67 in 2020 to 83 in 2025.
The US has been downgraded from 'narrowed' to 'obstructed' civic space due to increased repression.
Official development assistance fell by 7.1% in 2024, with USAID closing in 2025.
The report suggests the Global South, including India, South Africa, and Brazil, could lead in promoting democracy and human rights.
