Meta Teen Safety Settlement Depends on Rival Platforms

Meta Teen Safety Settlement Depends on Rival Platforms

Meta owns Facebook and Instagram, and it agreed to a very large settlement about teenagers’ use of those apps.

State officials accused Meta of making the platforms too addictive and not protecting young people’s information.

They also alleged that the platforms contributed to mental health problems among teenagers.

Different reports gave different possible totals, ranging from about $17.1 billion to $18 billion.

The amount Meta must definitely pay was reported as roughly $12.1 billion to $12.7 billion.

The rest depends on whether TikTok and YouTube make similar agreements and use similar safety rules.

The proposed rules could limit daily use, block overnight access and strengthen age checks.

The money would go to state programs such as counseling and wellness initiatives, not directly to individuals.

Meta did not admit that it broke the law, and a court still must approve the agreement.
