Europe Faces Intensifying Wildfires While Climate Debate Continues
Europe is experiencing serious wildfires in several countries.
In France, fires have burned an unusually large amount of land.
A fire grew quickly near the city of Bordeaux.
In Spain, 12 people died during fires this summer.
The fires reached an area where wildfires do not usually happen.
Near Belgium, another fire destroyed a very large peat area in a national park.
The peat had become extremely dry after many months without enough rain.
The article says climate change and poor management are both part of the problem.
It also says Europe is not prepared well enough for these growing dangers.
France reportedly burned more land in the first seven months of this year than during all of 2025.
A major wildfire threatened the outskirts of Bordeaux after developing within a few days.
Twelve people were killed by wildfires in Spain this summer, including in an area where such fires are normally rare.
A fire near a Belgian holiday home destroyed a large peat area in a national park.
The peatland had dried out after months of drought, with the article also blaming structural mismanagement.
- Who
- People in France, Spain, and Belgium were affected by wildfires; 12 people were killed in Spain.
- What
- Wildfires burned forests, threatened Bordeaux, killed people in Spain, and destroyed a large peat area near Belgium.
- When
- The events occurred during the first seven months of this year, this summer, and this week, according to the article.
- Where
- France, the outskirts of Bordeaux, Spain, and a national park near the Belgian holiday home mentioned in the article.
- Why
- The article links the fires to climate change, months of drought, dried-out land, and structural mismanagement.

What is driving the fires?
Climate Change Emphasis
The article presents worsening drought, unusual wildfire locations, and increasingly severe fires as evidence that Europe is facing the effects of climate change.
Management Failure Emphasis
The article says the Belgian peatland fire was also enabled by structural mismanagement, suggesting that land management contributed alongside drought.
Europe’s preparedness
Climate Change Emphasis
The article argues that Europe is not ready for the growing wildfire threat.
Management Failure Emphasis
A focus on structural mismanagement implies that improved management could reduce some of the risks, even as drought persists.
- France
- More ground had reportedly burned in the first seven months of this year than in all of 2025.
- Bordeaux
- A large fire developed within a few days and threatened the outskirts of the city.
- Spain
- Wildfires killed 12 people this summer.
- Unusual location
- The Spanish fires affected an area where wildfires normally do not occur.
- Belgian fire
- A large fire near a Belgian holiday home burned a giant peat area in a national park.
- Drought
- The peat area had dried out completely after months of drought.
- Management
- The article also attributes the Belgian fire’s conditions to structural mismanagement.
