Centre Mandates 2-Year Central Deputation for IPS Officers
The government has decided that IPS officers who joined in 2011 or later must have at least two years of experience working at the SP or DIG level in central positions to be considered for the rank of Inspector General (IG) at the Centre.
This rule is similar to one that already exists for IAS officers.
The goal is to make sure these officers have enough experience working directly in the field at the Centre before they can take on higher roles.
Before this, there was no such requirement for IPS officers.
The Centre has decided to change the norms to address the persistent shortage of officers at the SP and DIG ranks in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), central police organisations and key security-related posts.
Government mandates 2 years of central deputation for IPS officers of 2011 batch and onwards for IG empanelment.
Aim is to address the shortage of officers at the SP and DIG ranks in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and central police organisations.
Similar requirement already exists for IAS officers deputed to the Centre.
No such mandatory requirement existed previously for IPS officers posted to Central Armed Police Forces and other IG-level positions.
Order issued on January 28 by the Ministry of Home Affairs to enforce this new rule.
