RBI Introduces Specified Non-Financial Assets (SNFAs) Rules
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced new rules called Specified Non-Financial Assets (SNFAs).
These rules apply when borrowers fail to repay their loans.
Banks can take over properties like houses or land as SNFAs.
The RBI has set guidelines for how banks should manage and sell these properties.
Banks must sell SNFAs through public auctions and cannot sell them back to the original borrower or their relatives.
Loans become non-performing assets (NPAs) if repayments are overdue for more than 90 days.
The SARFAESI Act helps banks recover money by selling or managing the properties without going to court.
This act is used when borrowers default for more than six months.
The new rules aim to make the process clearer and fairer for both banks and borrowers.
RBI introduced SNFAs rules for managing properties acquired from defaulting borrowers.
SNFAs include residential and commercial properties taken as loan settlement.
Banks must dispose of SNFAs through public auctions under SARFAESI Act principles.
Resale of repossessed properties to original borrowers or related parties is prohibited.
SNFAs are separately categorized in bank balance sheets, not counted as NPAs.
