Telangana Film Chamber Seeks Review Of Revised Ticket Pricing
The Telangana government changed the rules for ticket prices in some single-screen cinemas.
Certain theatres with specific sound and projection equipment can now charge up to Rs.
300.
The Telangana Film Chamber is worried that this could make it harder for single-screen cinemas to survive.
Many theatres in Hyderabad are air-cooled rather than fully air-conditioned.
Their owners may need to spend about Rs.
1 crore to upgrade their cooling systems.
Exhibitors say they already face high maintenance costs and low earnings.
The chamber wants the government to discuss the changes with film industry groups before putting them into effect.
It has also suggested creating a committee to help make decisions about cinema regulations.
The Telangana government has allowed eligible single-screen theatres to charge up to Rs. 300 per ticket.
The revised pricing applies to theatres with Dolby 7.1 sound and 2K projection under the “Special Theatre” category.
The Telangana State Film Chamber of Commerce says the decision could hurt single-screen theatres and reduce moviegoing.
Exhibitors say many air-cooled theatres lack the infrastructure to qualify for higher rates and face substantial upgrade costs.
The chamber wants G.O. 77 withdrawn or reconsidered after consultation with film industry representatives and government officials.
