Calcutta High Court Stays Mamata Banerjee’s Sreerampore Meeting
Mamata Banerjee’s political group wanted to hold a meeting in Sreerampore on Friday.
The police had not allowed the original programme, so the group asked the Calcutta High Court for permission.
A single judge allowed a smaller meeting with several rules.
It could run from 1 p.m.
to 3 p.m.
and have no more than 2,000 people.
The judge did not allow a planned rally because it could cause traffic jams.
The state government and the ground’s owner then objected to using the location.
They said the ground was private property used for religious purposes.
A larger court bench temporarily stopped the permission and asked the organizers to look for another place.
The bench will consider the dispute again on Friday.
A Calcutta High Court division bench stayed approval for Mamata Banerjee’s Friday meeting in Sreerampore, Hooghly.
A single-judge bench had allowed the meeting from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. with up to 2,000 attendees.
The court rejected permission for a proposed rally from Mahesh to Sreerampore Court because of possible traffic congestion.
The state government and venue owner objected to using private property, which they said served religious purposes, for a political event.
The division bench will hear the matter again Friday at noon and asked organizers to find an alternative venue.
