Chennai Tightens Security for Modi’s October 11 Visit
Chennai is preparing for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit on October 11.
Police have sent 15,000 personnel to help keep the visit secure.
They will protect the airport, event locations, roads and busy transport places.
Modi is expected to travel around the city by road, after a helicopter plan was dropped.
Police are checking vehicles and inspecting hotels and other places where people stay.
Some areas will be red zones on October 10, where drones and other unmanned flying objects are not allowed.
Extra rules will also apply at the old airport during the security period.
The measures are meant to protect the visit and the places connected to it.
Authorities have deployed 15,000 police personnel across Chennai in a five-tier security operation for Narendra Modi’s October 11 visit.
Security will cover the airport, scheduled programme venues, proposed road routes, transport hubs and surrounding areas.
Modi is scheduled to arrive at the old airport at 11:10 a.m., visit Porur, IIT Madras and Chennai Trade Centre, and leave for Delhi at 4 p.m.
His planned helicopter trip to Porur was dropped, so his movements in Chennai will be by road; the SPG has also sought enhanced security amid the possibility of roadshows.
Red-zone restrictions on October 10 prohibit drones and other unmanned aerial objects in listed areas; airport measures also include restrictions on temporary workers and balloon flights.
