Iran Announces Huge Gas Discovery Amid War and Sanctions Pressure

Iran says it found a very large natural-gas field in southern Fars Province.

The field contains more than 7.5 trillion cubic feet of gas.

Officials estimate that about 5.7 trillion cubic feet might be possible to remove and use.

The gas is called “sweet” because it has relatively little hydrogen sulphide and other impurities.

That could make the gas easier and cheaper to process.

However, Iran cannot use the gas immediately because the field still needs to be developed and connected to its energy system.

Iran’s energy facilities and gas-production capacity have been damaged during the conflict with Israel and the United States.

The country is also facing possible new United States sanctions and limited investment.

New gas production could therefore be years away.
