Indian Stocks Extend Four-Session Slide Amid FII Outflows
India’s two main stock-market indexes fell on Thursday.
The Sensex and Nifty had already declined for three trading days in a row.
Foreign investors were selling many Indian shares, which made other investors cautious.
Higher interest rates on US government bonds also made some overseas investments look more attractive.
Oil prices were below USD 100 early in the day, which gave markets some relief.
Later, Brent oil rose to about USD 100.80, adding to worries.
Several auto, metal and consumer companies lost value.
Some technology and banking companies gained, but they could not stop the overall market decline.
The Sensex fell 570.59 points, or 0.79%, to close at 71,909.70, after touching a 52-week low of 71,292.88.
The Nifty dropped 198.50 points, or 0.88%, to settle at 22,421.95, extending its decline for a fourth consecutive session.
Foreign Institutional Investors sold Rs 10,148.41 crore on Wednesday and Rs 34,203.14 crore over five sessions.
Higher US Treasury yields and elevated crude prices pressured investor sentiment, although crude was below USD 100 early in trading.
Auto, metals and consumer-related shares fell, while IT, telecommunications, insurance and hospital stocks helped limit losses.
