Operation Safed Sagar shows restraint; Vijeta reckons human cost
There is a new show called Operation Safed Sagar.
It tells the story of pilots in the Indian Air Force during the Kargil conflict in 1999.
The show is about brave pilots and their leaders in a squadron called the Golden Arrows.
It also shows what was happening in Pakistan at the time, with leaders like General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
A reviewer compared this show with an old movie called Vijeta from 1982.
That movie is about a father who is very scared and sad when his son goes to war as a pilot.
The reviewer says the show is good because it is calm and thoughtful.
But the reviewer says the show does not show enough about how war hurts people.
The old movie does a better job of showing the pain war causes.
In the movie, even the brave pilot starts to worry about hurting innocent people.
Operation Safed Sagar is a six-episode series by creators Abhijeet Singh Parmar and Kushal Srivastava about the Indian Air Force's 'Golden Arrows' squadron during the 1999 Kargil conflict.
The Indian side features Siddharth as Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, Jimmy Shergill as Wing Commander Tony, and Abhay Verma as Dhali.
Manu Rishi Chadha plays General Pervez Musharraf and Vinay Pathak plays Nawaz Sharif in the series' political-thriller portions set in Pakistan.
The review contrasts the series with Govind Nihalani's 1982 anti-war film Vijeta, starring Shashi Kapoor, Kunal Kapoor and Supriya Pathak.
The review praises the series' restraint and moral clarity but says it falls short of reckoning with war's human cost, which Vijeta confronts more powerfully.

Jingoistic patriotic perspective
Patriotism in war storytelling
Anti-war, humanist perspective
Patriotism should be expressed with restraint and moral clarity, without grandstanding or manufactured hatred.
Jingoistic patriotic perspective
War films traditionally present a patriotic hero who is brave, unquestioning and eager to kill, with the enemy endlessly vilified.
Portrayal of the enemy
Anti-war, humanist perspective
Enemies should be shown as human and fallible, with their internal politics explored dramatically, as Operation Safed Sagar does with Pakistani characters.
Jingoistic patriotic perspective
Conventional war narratives render the enemy as villains born with hatred and sustained by vengeance.
War's human cost
Anti-war, humanist perspective
War narratives must confront the human cost of war, including grief, doubt and guilt, as Vijeta does.
Jingoistic patriotic perspective
A war narrative can observe the machinery of war with discipline and detachment, with soldiers acting as 'razor blades' who strike without emotion.
