India Approves Rs 7,280-Crore Rare Earth Magnet Scheme
The Indian government has approved a big plan worth Rs 7,280 crore to make rare earth magnets in India.
These magnets are very important for things like electric cars, wind turbines, and other high-tech stuff.
Right now, China makes most of these magnets, and that's a problem because other countries, including India, have to buy them from China.
The new plan will help India make its own magnets, which will be good for the country's technology and defense needs.
The government will give money to companies that want to make these magnets, but it will be a big challenge because China is way ahead in making them cheaply.
India is also trying to find more of the special materials needed to make these magnets, both in India and in other countries.
The Indian government approved a Rs 7,280-crore scheme to promote rare earth permanent magnet (REPM) manufacturing.
China controls over 90% of the global REPM market, posing a risk to the global supply chain.
The scheme aims to support 6,000 metric tonnes per annum of integrated REPM manufacturing capacity.
Selected beneficiaries will receive sales-linked incentives worth Rs 6,450 crore over five years, along with a capital subsidy of Rs 750 crore.
India currently imports over 53,000 tonnes of rare earth magnets annually, with over 90% coming from China.
