Tamil Nadu Seeks Supreme Court Order for Cauvery Water Share
Tamil Nadu says it should get more water from the Cauvery River.
The state says Karnataka has a lot of water stored in its dams and should give Tamil Nadu 26.954 TMC of it.
Karnataka was told to release only about 4.5 TMC, but Tamil Nadu says the actual flow was much less.
Recent rains in Karnataka’s catchment areas have increased water, so Tamil Nadu believes it deserves a bigger share.
The Tamil Nadu government asked the Supreme Court to make Karnataka give the water it owes.
The court will decide if Karnataka must release the requested amount.
This is part of a long‑running water dispute between the two states.
The Supreme Court will look at the rules set by the Cauvery Water Management Authority and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee.
The outcome will affect farmers and people who rely on the river in both states.
Tamil Nadu filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Aug 3, 2026, demanding its due share of Cauvery water.
The state claims Karnataka has 77.537 TMC of water in its reservoirs and should release 26.954 TMC proportionally.
The CWRC directed Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs (≈4.536 TMC) from July 29 to Aug 12, 2026, but Tamil Nadu says actual inflow was only 158–550 cusecs.
Tamil Nadu argues that recent rains increased catchment inflows, making the 26.954 TMC share justified.
The petition seeks Supreme Court orders to enforce Karnataka’s compliance with CWMA and CWRC directives.
