India Softens Sugar Warnings as Coca-Cola Defends Labeling Position

India’s food regulator changed its approach to sugar warning labels on packaged foods.

The regulator is called FSSAI.

Coca-Cola said it supports labels that explain information on the front of packages.

However, a Reuters report said a Coca-Cola India executive questioned whether warning symbols would change what people eat or drink.

Coca-Cola uses traffic-light labels in some European markets.

Its Swiss affiliate describes those labels as clear and transparent.

After a meeting with food companies on March 19, FSSAI told a court that international standards were difficult to match.

The reports show a disagreement about how useful front-of-pack sugar warnings are.
