India Considers Graded Opening to China
India is thinking about slowly opening up its economy to China.
This means they might make it easier for Chinese businesses to invest and work in India, but only if China does the same for India.
Right now, there are some rules that make it hard for Chinese companies to invest in India, but the government is looking at changing some of these rules.
They have already made it easier for Chinese workers to get business visas.
The idea is to do this step by step, not all at once.
This is important because it could help Indian companies that need Chinese parts or experts to run their factories.
It could also help India sell more things to other countries.
Both countries have been talking about making things better between them, like letting people travel more easily and sharing information.
India is considering a 'graded' opening of its economy to China, with incremental easing of restrictions contingent on reciprocity from Beijing.
The government has already eased the business visa process for Chinese workers and is examining the relaxation of some investment-related restrictions.
A high-level committee chaired by NITI Aayog member Rajiv Gauba recommended withdrawing curbs on Chinese investments.
India imposed restrictions on Chinese investments through Press Note 3 in April 2020, requiring government approval for investments from border-sharing countries.
Indian visa issuances to Chinese nationals fell from around 2 lakh in 2019 to just a few thousand in 2024, while China issued over 1.8 lakh visas to Indians in 2023.
