India Tightens OCI Rules Over Criminal Convictions
India is making stricter rules for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards.
The government can now take away an OCI card if someone is sentenced to two or more years in jail.
The government can also revoke the status if cardholders are charged with a crime that could lead to a sentence of seven or more years in prison.
These rules apply whether the crime happened in India or another country, as long as the crime is against Indian law.
OCI cards are for people of Indian origin, giving them easier access to India.
This change is meant to make sure the OCI program stays safe and trustworthy.
MHA can cancel OCI registrations for serious criminal offenses.
Revocation applies to those sentenced to two or more years in prison.
Revocation is also triggered if charged with an offense punishable by seven or more years.
The new rules apply to convictions in India or abroad, if recognized under Indian law.
