India Needs Prevention-Focused Mental Health System Design

India Needs Prevention-Focused Mental Health System Design

India needs to help people with mental health conditions, but it can also work to prevent some of those problems from developing.

Nachiket Mor says that people’s homes, schools, jobs, finances, and relationships can affect mental health.

A study by Mor and Iti Bhargava suggests that improving these conditions could lower the country’s future burden of mental illness.

At work, offering counselling may not be enough.

Employers can also improve how jobs are designed and how managers treat people.

Mor proposes that local health providers help notice changes in behaviour and connect people to simple, safe resources.

People who need more help could be referred to trained aides, doctors, or psychiatrists.

The proposed care model still needs to be tested in the field.

The goal is to prevent illness, spot problems early, and support recovery.
