Nepal Flash Flood Exposes South Asia’s Cross-Border Risks

A very fast flood hit central Nepal on August 26.

More than 160 people were reported dead, and nearly 500 were still missing.

Scientists think falling ice and rocks from a high mountain may have helped start the flood, but they are still studying other possible causes.

The water rose many metres in only 30 minutes, so people had very little time to escape.

The flood damaged villages, roads, bridges and power projects.

Rivers from the Himalayas flow across countries, so a dangerous event in Nepal can threaten people in India too.

Warmer temperatures may be making glaciers and other frozen areas less stable, although climate change alone has not been blamed for this flood.

Experts say countries should share information and use satellites, sensors and warnings to help communities move to safety sooner.
