Karnataka Mulls Internal Reservation for Scheduled Castes
The government in Karnataka is trying to figure out how to divide up the benefits (like jobs and education spots) that are meant for people in the Scheduled Castes, a group of people who have faced difficulties in the past.
They want to make sure these benefits go to the people who need them the most, and not just the groups that are already doing okay.
They have a plan to split SCs into different groups and give each group a certain amount of these benefits.
This plan also considers how educated, how socially backward and the population of these groups.
But this is not easy, there is political opposition and it is a complicated issue.
Karnataka government considers internal reservation for Scheduled Castes.
Justice Das Commission report recommends dividing SCs into five categories.
Report suggests quotas based on population, education, and social backwardness.
Existing 17% SC reservation is to be reallocated among sub-groups.
