India's fertility rate drops despite young adults' desire for parenthood
A recent survey by the United Nations Population Fund found that most young adults around the world still want to get married and have children.
However, in India, the fertility rate has dropped below the replacement level of 2.1 births per woman, to 1.9.
This is because many young people feel they need stable jobs, financial security, and affordable housing before they can start a family.
The survey shows that while people still value family life, it's becoming harder to achieve due to financial and emotional challenges.
Governments need to address these issues to ensure that young people can fulfill their family aspirations.
India's total fertility rate has dropped to 1.9, below the replacement level of 2.1 births per woman.
More than two-thirds of young adults surveyed prefer marriage and parenthood, but structural barriers delay these aspirations.
Financial security is the highest-rated consideration for partnership formation, cited by 81% of respondents.
Economic and housing constraints are barriers for 57% of respondents.
More than eight in 10 Indian respondents feel positive about the future despite these challenges.
