Himalayan Glacier Melt Threatens Water Security and Livelihoods

Himalayan Glacier Melt Threatens Water Security and Livelihoods

Scientists say glaciers in the Himalayas are shrinking faster than before.

Glaciers are large rivers of ice that store water.

As they melt, rivers may first get more water and later receive less.

This change could threaten drinking water, farming, and other needs.

The region may reach “peak water” around the middle of this century.

Melting ice can also create unstable lakes held back by loose rock and ice.

A glacier collapse in late August caused landslides and floods near Nepal and Tibet.

The report says at least 1,300 people died and more than 5,300 were missing.

Millions of people live below these dangerous lakes and depend on Himalayan water.
